My Haunting Deadlines BY: Ogunsanmi Adeola Susan. On the table were many books waiting to be read, a lot of laundry to be done, and a lot of meetings to attend. Tomi wondered why the life of a student should be this occupied. Tiredly, he dragged himself to the corner where his laundry basket was seated and set out to wash the clothes.  It took him two hours to finish washing the clothes. He finally let out a breath of relief after spreading the last shirt. Bending down to pack his buckets, he heard his back make a soft sound accompanied by a sharp pain. Struggling to stand straight, he exhaled, "What a day!" He dashed into the room after managing to climb up the stairs to the first floor where he stayed. Confronted with the need to read the books on the table, his heart skipped and began to pound heavily. It's the fifth week of resumption and he hasn't even opened his books for once. Thank goodness he attends classes but he has never taken it upon himself to read. Th...

Super Eagles Soar Past Indomitable Lions in Tense AFCON Encounter BY: TANFOLUWA CHERISH. The air crackled with anticipation in Abidjan's Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny as Nigeria and Cameroon, two African footballing giants, clashed in the Round of 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Both teams, boasting rich histories and passionate fan bases, promised a spectacle, and the match did not disappoint. From the opening whistle, the intensity was palpable. Tackles flew, passes zipped, and the roar of the crowd echoed through the stands. Nigeria, seeking revenge for their group stage defeat to Senegal, started brightly, with Samuel Chukwueze causing havoc down the right wing. His pace and trickery were a constant threat to the Cameroonian defense. The breakthrough came in when a perfectly weighted through ball from Moses Simon found Chukwueze in space, and the Villarreal winger coolly slotted the ball past Andre Onana in the Cameroonian goal. Awoite erupted in a cacophony of cheers as ...

SAPA BY: LAWAL KEHINDE An unwanted visitor that set its course, All the nook and cranny of Nigeria, it crosses, Its presence smells of unadulterated danger, Its death, a throbbing delightful manna. A routine guest amidst undergraduate, Alchemizing students from readers to needers, Leaving a figure so frail and delicate, With eyes raised above, seeking mercy from his Maker. In an attempt to exist, breathe, and persist, Just so the body doesn't depart before the soul passes on, A salvation for him; cassava grits, a meal he knows he can't resist, Illuminating dead faces and proffering a glimmer of hope. Recognized by all ages while acknowledging none, It's footprint - Scarcity, Adversity, Poverty, and Agony, By all means, man tries to avert in any possible way he can infer, Beseeching to the Almighty for liberation from the shackles of SAPA.

Tides of the Mon-Day. BY: JOSEPHINE OGWUDA For students, the "Tides of the Day" can be turbulent. Sunday evenings are often spent dreading the looming wave of Monday, with its packed schedules and dreaded first bell. But how do you navigate this tide? Do you surrender to the chaos or equip yourself to ride the waves? As an awoite, Obafemi Awolowo Hall is known for being the farthest and most stressful female hall because of its location and the agonizing staircase. And my fifth-floor perch guarantees daily stair-climbing expeditions. And if you are like my neighbour, who can't run lots of errands in one go, it turns into a mini Olympic - Let's scale Everest! Yet, it's also a source of pride, having birthed the Student Union Vice President and boasting an "Amazlms" spirit of unity. Let's hear about my Monday! Sunday evenings, I tame the Monday beast. Is Nigeria still the giant of Africa? BY: Tanfoluwa Cherish. I came across a speech I wrote in 2017 that won my school a gold medal. I'm in awe at the conclusive part of the speech "This is Nigeria, the giant of Africa shouldn't we..." But then I asked myself, "Is Nigeria still the giant of Africa?" Nigeria, as the "Giant of Africa," has long been recognized for its large population, diverse culture, and economic potential. However, several factors have hindered the nation from fully living up to this title. - Evident In the increasing rate of JAPA.   However, despite being the largest economy in Africa, Nigeria grapples with significant economic disparities. High levels of poverty, unemployment, and inequality persist, hindering the nation's ability to fully harness its economic potential.    She has faced longstanding challenges related to corruption and governance. Transparency and accountability issues have impacted the effectiveness of pub...

IT IS MONDAY AGAIN BY: Ummulkhayr In most countries of the world, weekends start on Friday. It is afterwards, a jolly ride till Sunday. A lot of fun activities are slated to be on the weekends to relieve the body of the stress of the gone weekdays. That is probably why we have the ‘Owanbe’ on weekends (It could also be to allow more attendance). An average Nigerian would either be home sleeping on Saturday or out chilling with friends at ceremonies or parties. Although, we still have the workaholics who would still have meetings and appointment on weekends. For a university student, weekends serve as a break away from the weekdays which are filled with 8 to 6 classes, assignments, tests, practical and everything a student will call stress. That is mostly why students look forward to weekends – free days with nothing to do. As beautiful as the weekends are, the last day of the weekend – Sunday is when the flex ends. The groan that follows is “Uhh, Monday is here already.” Mondays a...

LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL; A SCAM OR A SUCCOUR? BY: Ogunsanmi Adeola Susan. Sitting alone on the stem of a tree cut down along the narrow path that leads to the main road, Abimbola said to herself, “I think I have found a perfect spot for myself.” Over the weeks, she had visited this same spot every evening. She enjoys the serenity and the fact that it accords her the privilege of being away from everyone else together with every struggle of life. She mumbled with her lips a song that has now become her favourite “My hope is built on nothing less..” Many times she had asked herself, “Why does my name indicate that I am born with wealth when I have nothing to live for?” She works two different jobs to pay her fees and to make ends meet. She devotes herself to the reading of her books but it seems nothing is working in her favour. She had hoped that things would get better soon but all to no avail. The situation for her has usually been from frying pan to fire. Sitting under th...

THE SOUND WE ALL HEARD. BY: Tanfoluwa Cherish. I bet your first thought was that a huge thing fell from the sky? A racing car tyre busted? Ohhh it just a thunder? Is this the end time?   Unfortunately, yesterday in Ibadan was marked by a tragedy. The city experienced a devastating explosion that caused widespread damage, casualties, and urgent rescue efforts. Here's what we know: CAUSE:  The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, but Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has attributed it to illegal miners storing explosive materials in a building. IMPACTS:    The explosion caused significant damage to buildings in the Bodija area, including collapsed ceilings and blown-out windows.  Governor Seyi Makinde reported two confirmed fatalities and 77 injured. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing, so the numbers may unfortunately rise. RESPONSE:  Security personnel, including the army and police anti-bomb units, have been deployed to the af...

The Evolution of  Women's Sports: Breaking Boundaries and Making History BY: Tanfoluwa Cherish. Women's sports have come a long way, from fighting prejudice and discrimination to experiencing unmatched success on a global scale. The incredible journey of women's sports development is a product of the unceasin g efforts of committed players, supporters, and society at large. Let's examine the encouraging development of women's sports in this article and appreciate the advancements that have been made. The Early Challenges Women have encountered tough obstacles in sports participation throughout history. The first Olympic Games organized by the IOC were first held in ancient Greece, where women were not allowed to participate due to the consensus that exercise would undermine their femininity. Similar prejudices continued throughout history, with societal standards frequently preventing women from participating in sports. The Birth of Contemporary Women's Sport...

HOPE BY: Tanfoluwa Cherish. With the gentle murmurs of daybreak's soft glow, Exciting optimism soars, a winged show. The world's canvas is painted in delicate swirls as a melody of dreams gently unfolds. Amidst insecurities akin to the trill of a songbird, Hope flits around gleefully, an unassailable thrill. A radiant strand meanders amidst darkness, Leading spirits onward to where aspirations manifest. With the dawn's vow and nightfall's calm, An everlasting stroke of hope remains. It weaves a tapestry of joy that my heart can embrace, whether in storms or sunshine.

THE DEBATABLE ISSUE OF TRANSWOMEN IN FEMALE SPORTS. BY: TANFOLUWA CHERISH. Advocates say that trans women should be permitted to participate in feminine sports, focusing on inclusivity and equal chances. No one should have to decide between being who they are and playing the sport they love. The complexity of this problem is due to the legitimate issues it raises regarding women's sports' fairness, safety, and integrity.   While appreciating the value of equitable and inclusive athletic conditions for all, this article will give arguments in opposition to the belief that trans women should be permitted to compete in female sports. Biological Differences The fundamental biological distinctions between male and female athletes are one of the main grounds against trans women participating in female sports.  According to science, due to the different amounts of testosterone in each gender, male athletes often have physical advantages that significantly improve performance in terms...

Sound Health; A Necessity BY: Ogunsanmi Adeola Susan. Health, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is defined as the condition of being sound in body, mind, or Spirit. It can also refer to the state of physical, mental, emotional, social, and financial completeness. Health is no doubt a key to long life as well as effectiveness in everyday living. Quite a number of people refuse to pay attention to their health until they come down with an ailment. This is very bad and can lead to unrectifiable complications. Having regular exercise, and sleeping adequately and regularly are a component of sound health that cannot be overemphasized. Students should note that this has nothing to do with negligence. It is expected that you read or work when you’re supposed to and sleep when you should. Mental fitness is a major component of healthy living.  ROADSIDE BUKAS OR CLASSY RESTAURANTS? BY: OLUWAFUNMITO BABAWALE Whether from Iya Sidi's ewa agoyin... Or the 5 star Café, Bars & Grills... Every man must eat, but where you eat and what you eat are two very important factors to consider if you're concerned about your health. A lot of people would agree with me that the location and beauty of a restaurant are also very important. It's one of the first things anyone, especially me, would consider before I even think about the quality and cost of the food. If there were to be a poll to choose between the cost of food and the quality of food, a lot of people would rather choose to consider the cost of food than its quality.  So many factors override the beauty of a restaurant. Most bukas aren't eye-catching but they serve quality food. I won't ignore the fact that some really fine restaurants serve foods of lesser quality than bukas. Many people would gladly eat in big restaurants because it connotes a high social ...
