LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL; A SCAM OR A SUCCOUR?
Sitting alone on the stem of a tree cut down along the narrow path that leads to the main road, Abimbola said to herself, “I think I have found a perfect spot for myself.” Over the weeks, she had visited this same spot every evening. She enjoys the serenity and the fact that it accords her the privilege of being away from everyone else together with every struggle of life. She mumbled with her lips a song that has now become her favourite “My hope is built on nothing less..”
Many times she had asked herself, “Why does my name indicate that I am born with wealth when I have nothing to live for?” She works two different jobs to pay her fees and to make ends meet. She devotes herself to the reading of her books but it seems nothing is working in her favour. She had hoped that things would get better soon but all to no avail. The situation for her has usually been from frying pan to fire.
Sitting under these trees is the only thing that gives her joy after working out herself the whole day with little or no time to attend lectures. She wondered if the situation was ever going to turn around for good. Then, she remembered an adage that says “There is light at the end of the tunnel.” A woman she worked with once told her that. Could this be true? If it is, how long is this tunnel? Frustrated and pathetic at the same time, she concluded it was all a lie and there was no light anywhere. Maybe this is all life has for her and she just has to carry her cross.
She imagined what her life would have been like if her mother the only parent she grew up with had not died. She has no one to call family as she knows none other than her late mum. Seeing that it was getting dark, Abimbola stood up and made her way to return to the small room she shared with one of her close friends. Hoping to continue the routine her life has always been about the next day. She managed to fake a smile on her face.
Feeling extremely tired, she jumped on the student-sized bed she shared with Dammy, her friend. Dammy is a lady from an average home with both parents alive, she has been very supportive of Abimbola. She would usually give Abimbola her note to copy after each class. She even helps her to submit assignments. Now on the bed, she saw an old jotter of hers and she flipped through it. She saw where she wrote how she promised her mum on her deathbed to never give up on life. Then she remembered her mum would usually say ‘When the going gets tough, then the tough get going'. A tear dropped from her eyes and she said ' Abimbola this is not the time to back down, this isn’t the time to stop giving life a chance! You’ve come too far to give up!! Then as if a well of tears was dug inside of her, it came gushing out uncontrollably.
