Every student has his or her staple food. The choice of the staple food is not about the taste or any culinary attribute only, it is also about survival. On campus, food is not just a source of nutrition. It is a strategy to survive, and sometimes even a therapy.

For some, it is instant noodles – be it indomie, golden penny, honeywell, and the likes, because of its easy and fast cooking process. Whether cooked with sardine, egg, or just pepper and seasoning, noodles never fail. In fact, if noodles could give honourary degrees, half of us would have graduated by now.

Bread? The loyal friend! Bread and groundnut, bread and butter, bread and beans, bread and literally anything! It will always show up. When one’s account balance is weeping, bread becomes breakfast, lunch, and dinner without complaint.

Rice lovers usually feel on top of the world. They make statements like “rice is the real food for students, rice is the GOAT.” Rice is versatile, it can be made into jollof rice, fried rice, coconut rice, concoction, even the emergency “oil rice.” Rice is for those who want a little luxury, even in the middle of sapa.

And of course, spaghetti (noodles' fancier cousin) – some say it’s the most “aesthetic” food. Cook it with stew and meat (if you’re lucky), and you instantly feel like you’re living a soft life.

At the end of the day, every student says their choice is the ultimate. But to be honest, we know that when the hunger pangs come at midnight, it’s not about which one is best. It’s about which one is available.

So, noodles, bread, rice, spaghetti — which one really does it for you?
