The Agronomy Club, University of Ibadan, has commenced its week, themed “Ignite,” with a series of activities bringing students together through social, health and educational programmes.
Organised by The Audacious Team ’26, the programme began on Monday, September 28, and is scheduled to continue through Friday, October 2.
The first day featured Costume Day and Garri Day, with students turning up in different outfits for the occasion. A runway show was also held, with contestants competing for prizes as part of the day's activities.
On Tuesday, September 29, the club held Health Day, featuring basic health checks, including blood pressure, height and weight measurements. A health lecture themed “Blood Sugar Balance: Prevention Starts with You” was delivered by guest speaker, Dr. Samuel Oyeleke. Fruit cups were also distributed to students after the lecture.
The day also featured Common Pot, where students shared meals including eba, egusi, vegetables and fufu.
The third day, Wednesday, September 30, featured a Personality Lecture themed “Becoming an Agriculturist: Beyond the Farm.” The event was held at the Moshood Esuola Adeleke Conference Room, Department of Agronomy, University of Ibadan.
Hosted by Haymus, the programme began with an opening prayer, followed by an opening remark from the President of the Agronomy Club, Emiola Deborah.
The first speaker, Mr. Esezobor Oke Solomon, Senior Research Supervisor at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), highlighted the opportunities in agriculture beyond conventional farming and identified communication, technology, entrepreneurship, digital skills and leadership as important skills for future agriculturists.
The second speaker, Mr. Pelumi Aribisala, CEO and Co-founder of CATO Foods, highlighted the importance of value addition in agriculture. He described an agriculturist as a problem solver and encouraged students to ask, “What problem can I solve?” rather than focusing on what job agriculture can provide.
Aribisala also emphasised that agriculture extends beyond farming, stating that “adding value is the real deal.”
The third speaker, Prof. Julius Romiluyi Orimoloye, who also represented the Head of the Department of Soil Resources Management, Prof. S.O. Oshunsanya, highlighted the role of science and technology in modern agriculture. He noted that being an agriculturist goes beyond using traditional farming tools such as the hoe and cutlass and involves engaging with science and technology.
The Mother of the Day, Prof. Amudalat Bolanle Olaniyan, Head of the Department of Crop and Horticultural Sciences, also addressed the students, encouraging them to see agriculture as a field that provides opportunities to create value and build their own careers rather than relying solely on seeking employment after graduation.
The Personality Lecture also featured the presentation of prizes to contestants from the runway show held during Costume Day. Ojareche Abigail emerged as the winner, while Olaniyan Segun and Ogwuda Josephine emerged as the first and second runners-up respectively.
Awards were also presented to the invited speakers by the executive team through Dr. Odugbenro George.
With the first three days of activities completed, AGY Week 2026 continues with the remaining activities of the programme, including Games Day and HOD's Cup, scheduled for Friday, October 2.
