AGY Club Holds Departmental Congress

The departmental Congress of the Agronomy Club took place on Friday, April 24, at the Crop and Horticultural Sciences Laboratory.

The program began exactly at 2:27 pm, with an opening prayer led by Kehinde Esther Boluwatife.

The General Secretary, Mr. Idoko Emmanuel, read the agenda, which covered the upcoming dinner, departmental dues, and other internal matters.

President Emiola Favour then took the floor, sharing ideas to help Agronomy students fully embrace their identity as agricultural students. She outlined two core training aspects: field training and agricultural research. A field trip to an agricultural institute (such as IITA) was also proposed, with students contributing to transport fare and other items.

A major point of discussion was the proposed adjustment of the AGY CLUB constitution. Since the current set is the last to be called Agronomy, the President stressed the need to fine-tune the constitution to ensure unity and prevent bias in accessing departmental positions. The key question: should the department split into two clubs (SRM CLUB and CHS CLUB), or remain as one Agronomy Club?

Odia Mary proposed that the next generation should decide, suggesting a rotational leadership model: if the president comes from SRM, the Vice President should come from CHS, alternating every two years. Ojareche Abigail supported the idea and called for it to be legalised, adding that a by-election should be held if either side declines to hold any position.

The President also proposed the creation of an SLC (Students' Legislative Council) and raised the question of whether to host a grand faculty party or a smaller departmental dinner. She implored all members to pay their dues promptly.

A member complained about how the members did not know all the executives. In response, the executives introduced themselves one after the other.

On the decision of splitting the departmental group or not, it was decided that there will be no splitting of the department. It will continue to be AGRONOMY CLUB.

Following the decision, Gold Abimbola moved the motion to adjourn the Congress.

AGRONOMY: A department of Winners

  Earlier today, 7th of November, 2025, Agronomy students experienced multiple wins in the Literary and Debating Organization for the Faculty of Agriculture, that is, the Vocal Knights Literary and Debating Society. The representatives of the department, Najimdeen Rabiu Ayomide (a 300-level Soil Resources Management Unit student) and Popoola Taiwo Abidat (a 200-level Soil Resources Management Unit student), emerged second position with 72.92% at Agri-Speak 3.0, organized by the Vocal Knights Literary and Debating Society. The Deputy Knight Commander of the Vocal Knights Literary and Debating Society, Kayode Grace from the Agronomy Department (a 500-level student of the Crop and Horticultural Sciences Unit), handed the position over to another person today. Popoola Taiwo Abidat will be the Deputy Knight Commander for the upcoming session.
