Agronomy Club UI Holds Freshers' Orientation, Charges New Students on Excellence and Discipline

Agronomy Club, University of Ibadan held its freshers' orientation today, April 2, 2026, welcoming new students with a series of speeches and advisories aimed at setting a strong academic and social foundation.


Observing due protocol, the event commenced at 10:30 a.m. with the National Anthem, followed by the University of Ibadan anthem.


Otayemi Victor, the Department's Assistant General Secretary (AGS), delivered the opening remarks, urging freshers to remain focused and diligent throughout their academic journey.


Following him, Emiola Deborah Favour, President of the department, addressed the newcomers, emphasizing the need for seriousness and intentionality in their studies. She stressed that 100 level is foundational and warned students not to take it lightly. She also encouraged participation in extracurricular activities and socialization, urging students to join departmental clubs such as the Literary and Debating Club and the Press Club. "Health is wealth," she reminded them, advising them to take their physical well-being seriously.


Dr. George Odugbenro, the Soil Resources Management (SRM) Course Advisor, then took the podium, advising students to take academics seriously. He noted that having gained admission into the department, each student must decide whether to embrace the course or seek a transfer. He shed light on the university's grading system, warning that any student with a CGPA of 0.99 would be asked to withdraw. "If you have done poorly in 100 level, it will haunt you till your 500 level," he cautioned.


Dr. John Alabi, the Staff Adviser, spoke on the value of agriculture, assuring students that studying agriculture is a worthwhile pursuit. Advising those who may not have a personal mission, he said, "they should go with our mission." He shared practical tips that aided him during his own 100-level days, including attending every class, learning lecturers' names, and reading daily to better understand course material. He also urged students to prioritize their spiritual lives: "Know God for yourselves."


Professor Amudalat Olaniyan, Head of the Department of Crop and Horticultural Sciences (CHS), addressed the freshers, stating that their primary aim should be to bring development to the department. She advised them to dress well, work hard, relate harmoniously with one another, and read diligently. She challenged them to think beyond job seeking: "As graduates of agriculture, you shouldn't be going about looking for jobs, as you have what it takes to even create a job." She also stressed tolerance and the importance of balancing academic and social life.


Professor S.O Oshunsanya then addressed the students on the academic rules of the University of Ibadan. He explained that each semester runs for three months, with assessments based on taught content. He warned against skipping lectures, noting that 75% attendance is required to sit for examinations. Regarding exams, he stated that mobile phones are prohibited, students must arrive early, and no candidate would be admitted into the hall 30 minutes after commencement. He also advised students to immediately notify supervisors of anything that could implicate them.


The Social Minister, Akintola Luke, later introduced freshers to the various clubs available within the department. Following that, a member of the Agronomy Literary and Debating Club delivered a presentation titled, "What to Believe in Agriculture."


The event concluded with closing remarks by the Department President, Emiola Deborah Favour.

AGRONOMY: A department of Winners

  Earlier today, 7th of November, 2025, Agronomy students experienced multiple wins in the Literary and Debating Organization for the Faculty of Agriculture, that is, the Vocal Knights Literary and Debating Society. The representatives of the department, Najimdeen Rabiu Ayomide (a 300-level Soil Resources Management Unit student) and Popoola Taiwo Abidat (a 200-level Soil Resources Management Unit student), emerged second position with 72.92% at Agri-Speak 3.0, organized by the Vocal Knights Literary and Debating Society. The Deputy Knight Commander of the Vocal Knights Literary and Debating Society, Kayode Grace from the Agronomy Department (a 500-level student of the Crop and Horticultural Sciences Unit), handed the position over to another person today. Popoola Taiwo Abidat will be the Deputy Knight Commander for the upcoming session.
