POETRY

 SAPA

BY: LAWAL KEHINDE

An unwanted visitor that set its course,
All the nook and cranny of Nigeria, it crosses,
Its presence smells of unadulterated danger,
Its death, a throbbing delightful manna.

A routine guest amidst undergraduate,
Alchemizing students from readers to needers,
Leaving a figure so frail and delicate,
With eyes raised above, seeking mercy from his Maker.

In an attempt to exist, breathe, and persist,
Just so the body doesn't depart before the soul passes on,
A salvation for him; cassava grits, a meal he knows he can't resist,
Illuminating dead faces and proffering a glimmer of hope.

Recognized by all ages while acknowledging none,
It's footprint - Scarcity, Adversity, Poverty, and Agony,
By all means, man tries to avert in any possible way he can infer,
Beseeching to the Almighty for liberation from the shackles of SAPA.
