  Materialism: The Latest Canker Worm in Universities


You see them well-dressed, flaunting their money everywhere, and you assume it is their hard-earned money. You start to beat yourself up for the seemingly unachievable feat of theirs. Not only that, but you continue to push and push and begin to doubt yourself because your result doesn't seem to commensurate with your efforts.

So, you might actually seek them out.

You see, being in the university is like having a pair of glasses for your myopic eyes. You see things a little bit better. It could also be like looking through a kaleidoscope. You see the different shades and colours of life. Life on campus affords you the opportunity to question your values, and if you have really internalized your parent’s ever recurring warning: always be contented. 

It might be a big deal to know that your roommates are better off than you are. They may get to bring many expensive items, more foodstuffs and better clothing. They might afford to buy things on whim while you are still managing the last thousand from home.

Some days, you could sleep without food or better still with garri and nothing but sugar. However, the last man standing is the one who sees achievement beyond material things-  and know that things that aren't enough today would be in excess once he has achieved greatness, the real reason for being in school.

So, don't let yourself be introduced to wayward life because of lack of contentment. Some students are victims of bad friends who introduced them to an ostentatious lifestyle which in fact was a ruse.

Materialism is the latest canker worm in universities, especially in this high speed, IT-enhanced time. Recheck and affirm your values. And if contentment is not part of it, learn it.

His promotion is a reward of his years of dedication, scholarly work, and benefitting the department and the university community. AGRONOMY: A department of Winners

  Earlier today, 7th of November, 2025, Agronomy students experienced multiple wins in the Literary and Debating Organization for the Faculty of Agriculture, that is, the Vocal Knights Literary and Debating Society. The representatives of the department, Najimdeen Rabiu Ayomide (a 300-level Soil Resources Management Unit student) and Popoola Taiwo Abidat (a 200-level Soil Resources Management Unit student), emerged second position with 72.92% at Agri-Speak 3.0, organized by the Vocal Knights Literary and Debating Society. The Deputy Knight Commander of the Vocal Knights Literary and Debating Society, Kayode Grace from the Agronomy Department (a 500-level student of the Crop and Horticultural Sciences Unit), handed the position over to another person today. Popoola Taiwo Abidat will be the Deputy Knight Commander for the upcoming session.
