 APPRECIATING THE DIVERSE NATURE OF AGRONOMY





It is no longer news that the department of Agronomy, University of Ibadan has been further segmented into two distinct units, namely;

  • Crop and Horticultural sciences

  • Soil resources management

These two departments now make up what was earlier known as Agronomy department. Detailed knowledge of the two departments and other courses that constitute them will be very useful for every student of agronomy or, on a general note, any student of an agricultural discipline.

As we all know, Agronomy is the science of utilizing plants, animals and soils for food, fuel, feed and fiber. To achieve its purpose efficiently and sustainably, agronomy encompasses work in the areas of Plant breeding, Plant physiology, meteorology, animal sciences and soil science.

The department of Crop and Horticultural Sciences has the following courses attached to the unit.

  • Biostatistics and field experimentation

  • Crop Husbandry; a) Tuber and fiber crops b) cereals and legumes c) forage and pasture d) Vegetable crops

  • Crop production techniques

  • Crop processing and Agricultural mechanization

  • Horticultural crop production

  • Irrigation and drainage Management

  • Landscape horticulture management 

  • Plant breeding and genetics

  • Post-harvest physiology and technology

  • Seed production and plant propagation

  • Tissue culture and biotechnology

  • Weed science

The department of Soil resources management has the following courses attached to the unit.

  • Soil Physics and soil conservation

  • Soil Chemistry and soil microbiology

  • Soil fertility and plant Nutrition

  • Elements of soil science

  • Soil pedology and mineralogy

  • Soil survey and remote sensing

  • Principles of Agro climatology

  • Soil and water management

Crop Husbandry - is a branch of crop science that deals with the cultivation and production of edible crops for food, the science of raising crops. It also involves the various aspects of crops from seed sowing, on field and off-field operations, harvesting, threshing, storage and marketing of the products.

Biostatistics and field experimentation- deals with the statistical analysis of various aspects of crops like varietal and chemical trials, etc. and the effectiveness of particular pesticide against some pest of crop so that this data can be manipulated for useful purposes in the field.

Crop processing and Agricultural mechanization- crop processing is a crucial step in converting raw harvested agricultural products into valuable marketable products, while agricultural mechanization is a branch of crop science that involves the process whereby equipment, machinery and implements are utilized to boost agricultural and food production.

Crop production techniques - is a branch of crop science that deals with the steps and procedures by which high yield crop species are selected and cultivated, they include; site selection, ploughing, harrowing, ridging, planting, manuring, fertilizer application, irrigation, staking, etc.

Horticultural crop production- deals with the various aspects of raising and producing vegetables, fruits and ornamentals. It includes; olericulture, pomology and floriculture.

Irrigation and drainage management- deals with the science of artificial application of water to land and artificial removal of excess water from land, respectively. Drainage is employed in the reclamation of wetlands, in the prevention of erosion, and as concomitant of irrigation in the agriculture of arid regions.

Landscaping Horticulture management - deals with application of horticulture towards beautification of land through lawn laying and maintenance. 

Plant breeding nd genetics- deals with crop improvement through selection and hybridization of desired genotypes or phenotypes.

Weed Science- deals with the study and control of undesired plants or plants whose agronomic importance are not yet known.

Post-harvest physiology and technology - is a branch of crop science that deals with plant response to technologies and other applications that extend shelf life and quality and delay plant deterioration or death.

Seed production and plant propagation - is a branch of crop science which involves reproduction of plants by seeds and other plant parts.

Tissue culture and biotechnology- is a branch of crop science that deals with the growth of tissues or cells in an artificial medium separate from the parent organism. 

Agro-climatology- is a field in the interdisciplinary science of agro-meteorology, in which principles of climatology are applied to agricultural systems.

Soil Physics- is considered as the study of the physical, acoustical, hydrological, electrical, optical and thermal property of the soil.

Soil Science- deals with the physical, chemical and biological aspects of the soil in relation to crop health and productivity. The nutrient balance and fertilizer applications are recommended through various studies.
