ORGANIC FARMING: THE WAY OUT!



Organic Farming is a branch of crop production which deals majorly with the growing of crops that are free from Synthetic fertilizers and agrochemicals. 

Organic farming can be defined as an agricultural process that uses biological fertilizers and pest control acquired from animal or plant waste. In other words, organic farming is a new system of farming or agriculture that repairs, maintains, and improves the ecological balance.

The use of inorganic fertilizers for growing crops sprouts from a need to improve soil fertility and crop yield but these can be adequately achieved inherently through the use of eco-friendly and less hazardous materials that do not have an adverse effect on the consumer and on the environment.

One of the major benefits of Organic farming is that it enables the farmer to save the ecosystem from further damage and allows for the sustainable development of soils microflora and macrofauna.

Also, Healthy and more nutritious food produce can be obtained. Crops grown through organic farming methods are very high in nutrients, minerals, vitamins, and essential oils needed for body metabolism and activities.

The benefits of this method of farming to the environment are that it also helps to control soil erosion, prevent depletion of the ozone layer and improve the water quality of aquatic habitats.

The peculiarity of Organic farming is seen in the cost-effectiveness of its processes. It is highly economical. It doesn't cost much to practice organic farming as all materials used are biodegradable, recyclable, and easy to use.

By opting for organic products, the consumer through his/her purchasing power promotes a less polluting agricultural system. The hidden costs of agriculture to the environment in terms of natural resource degradation are reduced.

Some organic farming materials include: poultry manure, farm yard manure, plant wastes, green manures, cow dung, etc.

Although a major limitation of this method of Farming is that it is labour intensive.
