 THE STATE OF UI SECURITY: A COLLECTIVE EFFORT


It is no news to any UI student that there have been recent robbery incidents within the school premises.


These incidents come in the wake of an attempted kidnapping incident that happened to a student a couple of weeks ago in this very faculty; the Faculty of Agriculture. The disturbing rise in these incidents has left students in a state of high alert. 



However, these incidents were bound to happen. Robbery and kidnapping have been happening in various parts of the nation for a long time. The difference is just that it is happening in our own “backyard” and we can feel the heat now.


While the security authorities in the university are doing their best in curbing the activities of these miscreants, the onus lies on all students to play their part in maintaining the security of the University of Ibadan - well, unless you have a personal bodyguard. 


Just as the power of the pack is the wolf and the power of the wolf is the pack, you are a part of UI just as UI is a part of you


Here are some security tips you should take note of:

  • Do not answer if a car (especially if it is an old rickety car) stops by you to ask for directions. If you notice another person walking up to you saying that he/she knows the place, immediately shout “THIEF!!!” and run. 

  • When receiving a call from an unknown number, don't be the first person to speak. Also, let the person introduce him/ herself. 

  • Know your neighbours.

  • Don't stay out late and if you must, move in groups.

  • Let people close to you know where you are at any point in time

 

Please note that the aim of this write-up is not to cause you to panic.


Rather, it is to inform you and as well as encourage you to be proactive about the state of security in UI. As you go to your classes and perform your daily activities, remember that the security of any community is a collective effort, not a one-man job.

AGRONOMY: A department of Winners

  Earlier today, 7th of November, 2025, Agronomy students experienced multiple wins in the Literary and Debating Organization for the Faculty of Agriculture, that is, the Vocal Knights Literary and Debating Society. The representatives of the department, Najimdeen Rabiu Ayomide (a 300-level Soil Resources Management Unit student) and Popoola Taiwo Abidat (a 200-level Soil Resources Management Unit student), emerged second position with 72.92% at Agri-Speak 3.0, organized by the Vocal Knights Literary and Debating Society. The Deputy Knight Commander of the Vocal Knights Literary and Debating Society, Kayode Grace from the Agronomy Department (a 500-level student of the Crop and Horticultural Sciences Unit), handed the position over to another person today. Popoola Taiwo Abidat will be the Deputy Knight Commander for the upcoming session.
