How To Portray Agriculture As Sexy & Attractive

How To Portray Agriculture As Sexy & Attractive

When it comes to choosing Agriculture as a potential occupation, several Nigerian youths detest the idea. Infact, some youths  who are studying the course try to avoid the words “farming” and “Agriculture” when describing what they do.

A large  percentage of students studying Agriculture or related field in Nigerian tertiary institutions will tell you agriculture wasn’t their choice . The million dollar question we should ask ourselves is, "Why is this so?"

The simple answer is: Agriculture is perceived to be that of the uneducated rural farmer who engage in subsistence farming and is associated with hard labour and poverty.  Thus, my solution is to portray Agriculture as a sexy and attractive profession- which is the truth.

Money is certainly desirable, but it is not worth the effort if more money does not result in more fun. Unfortunately for the agricultural sector, the massive innovations of the past decades have had little effect on the image of an agricultural worker ingrained in young people’s mind – that image of a hardworking person who spends their time “digging [dirt] in the farm.”

This unappealing picture is further amplified by the fact that the “digging” can only happen on the farm, which has to be located in a rural and likely remote area.

HOW TO MAKE AGRICULTURE SEXY AND ATTRACTIVE

  • Change the picture

Some agricultural magazines still carry the picture of that old unkempt man in tattered clothes with a hoe or cutlass working on the farm. Nigerian youth want to look neat and slay a bit. The image of agriculture should be changed all around to the 21st century model thereby making it attractive to younger folks.

  • Use the "Catch Them Young" approach

The teenagers or secondary school students should be well informed about the value chain of agriculture. Let’s tell them the millions they can make out of it, teenagers' minds can gain so much exposure by visiting established agribusinesses. This helps them better appreciate the value chain and to see the different professionals in the agricultural industry.

  • The media, ICT and social media

Use these channels to improve Agriculture’s image across a broad audience and allow for sharing of information and experiences between young people.
